Established in 2008 as a quarterly publication, the African Sickle Cell News & World Report is the world’s first SCD-dedicated news-magazine. It was previously known as the Sickle Cell Journal.

Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) is humankind’s most commonly inherited blood disorder. It affects all races but is most predominant among Africans, West Africans in particular.

With an estimated 50 million healthy carriers of the Sickle Cell Trait (SCT), and between 3 to 5 million citizens having sickle cell anaemia (SCA), Nigeria harbours the largest population of people with SCT and SCA worldwide. The United Nations considers SCD a ‘global public health priority’ and appointed June 19 of every year World Sickle Cell Day.
